When to seek urgent medical care
Call 000 or attend an emergency department if you have trouble breathing, swallowing or speaking; significant bleeding going down your throat; marked swelling of your mouth, tongue, face or neck; or a significant facial or head injury.
What may be a dental emergency?
Urgent dental concerns can include:
- Severe or persistent tooth pain
- Swelling of the gums, jaw or face
- A knocked-out, loose, displaced, cracked or fractured adult tooth
- A suspected dental abscess or infection
- Bleeding from the mouth that does not stop
- A lost crown, filling or restoration causing pain or sharp edges
- Trauma to the teeth, mouth or jaw
- A broken orthodontic appliance causing discomfort or injury
- A dentist needs to assess the cause of the concern before treatment can be recommended.
If an adult tooth is knocked out
- Seek urgent dental care as soon as possible.
- Hold the tooth by the crown, not the root.
- If dirty, gently rinse it with milk or water. Do not scrub it.
- If possible, gently place the tooth back into its socket and hold it in position.
- If this is not possible, store it in milk or keep it in your mouth next to the cheek if safe to do so.
- Do not place a knocked-out baby tooth back into the mouth.
What happens at an emergency appointment?
Your dentist will assess the concern and discuss the treatment options that may be appropriate. This may include examination, X-rays or other records where clinically relevant. We will explain the relevant benefits, risks, costs, alternatives and expected treatment process before you decide whether to proceed. Some emergency concerns require further appointments, monitoring or referral.
Comfort and aftercare
Dental emergencies can be stressful. We will discuss what to expect and options for managing comfort during and after your appointment. After treatment, we will provide care instructions and arrange review or follow-up where appropriate.
