A Brief Introduction to World Oral Health Day
World Oral Health Day, or WOHD, was first dreamed up in 2007 as a fun and exciting way to promote the health of the mouth across the world. After lots of planning behind the scenes, the event was held for the first time in March 2013. Started by the FDI World Dental Federation, it raised awareness and provided hundreds of thousands of people with the means to keep their mouths healthy.
Supported by dental professionals around the world, it aims to raise awareness of specific issues and promote good practices for improving oral health. Competitions are also held each year to award students from different countries who’ve made a special effort to raise awareness. You can learn more about World Oral Health Day news by checking the official website.
Every campaign features a specific theme to raise awareness of a certain component of dental health. Previous themes include Brush for a Healthy Mouth, Live Mouth Smart, Smile for Life and Healthy Mouth, Healthy Body. While no specific element of dental health is more important than the rest, it’s a great way of promoting lesser-known areas of the topic.
The Importance of the Campaign
We all know how important it is to keep our teeth clean. No one wants to be walking around with bad breath, or struggling with a toothache! But the importance of oral health goes even further, in ways that many people aren’t aware of.
Poor dental health can be devastating for so many people. You could lose sleep from pain, or suffer socially. It’s easy to think of oral health as a minor issue, but it can have grave impacts on people suffering.
Poor oral health can even have a knock-on impact on other parts of your body. It’s a little-known fact that gum disease can increase the risk of heart disease. Keeping your mouth in great shape can help you to stay healthy generally as you grow older.
Beyond Just Healthy Teeth
Oral health goes far beyond healthy teeth. That might sound slightly strange at first, given the emphasis most dentists place on keeping your teeth clean. But it’s important to look after the other parts of your mouth, like your tongue, cheeks, and gums.
There’s even lots to think about beyond just your mouth! You probably already know that the food you eat has a big impact on oral health. But many people only think about food consumption in terms of the stuff that gets on their teeth, like the sugar left behind from a box of lollies.
But diet is so important to keeping teeth healthy. The food you eat contains important vitamins and minerals, vital for giving your mouth the components it needs to stay healthy.
This Year’s Event — Be Proud of Your Mouth
2022’s World Oral Health day is all about being proud of your teeth. Your smile is your first impression to the world, so it’s vital you can be confident about the way your teeth look! Feeling confident about your mouth can give you a confidence boost and improve your mental health.
In the run up to the event and afterwards, people around the world will be enjoying relevant activities to promote the theme. You can search online for activities you and your family can get involved in around your local area. If you prefer, try setting up activities for your children at home, like asking them to draw a picture of what their perfect smile might look like and come up with tips on how to keep their teeth looking good.
